A Rose By Any Other Name
Kate Nichols

UPDATE:  We are sad to report that Rose passed away in April 2008 from cancer.  Since that time Steve and
Linda have adopted a beautiful little girl pug puppy from PRoNE.  Rose had a wonderful few months being loved
and cared for by Steve and Linda and she has now moved to a better place where she is pain free.  Rose paved
the way for a new little girl known as Precious to join Steve and Linda's family.

I am lost and frightened on the streets of Plaistow. I am hungry and thirsty.
My feet hurt so much it is hard to walk.

“ Hello little pug. You look like you need help. Come to me and I will help you.”   She has a friendly face and a
kind voice. I go to her and she places me in the police car. She says her name is Det. McGurren and that she is
going to bring me to the vet for help. We drive to Plaistow Animal Hospital where many nice people make me feel
safe. They treat my sore feet. My nails are so long that they have grown into my pads and are infected. They
give me shots so I won’t get sick. Best of all, they give me dinner and a warm bed !

I stayed with the nice people at the vet’s for a week. Det. McGurren went on the news and tried to find my family
but couldn’t. Many people saw her and sent money for my care and offered to help me. One person who called
was Kate Nichols from PRoNE. She said she could find me a wonderful “forever” home ! When I was ready to
leave the vet’s, the police decided to call Kate . When she came to get me the Dr. told her some sad news. “We
believe this little girl has cancer”  “That is OK” said Kate, “ it may take longer to find a home for this special girl
but there will be a family that will give her love for all her days.”

At Kate’s house I had 5 pug friends to play with, lots of toys, and lots and lots of DINNER!!!!! The only thing I
didn’t have ( besides my new home ) was a NAME !! So, off we go to the Pug Social ! What a time I had. I had a
beautiful new party dress that was given to me. Many people stopped to talk with me. We decided to have a
contest to give me a name. I think many people were thinking of my pretty dress that had a flower on it because
the most favorite name was “Rose”. So, that is how I got my name.

Many people called about me but they were sad to hear I had cancer. They were afraid to adopt me. One
evening a man and woman called asking to adopt a little boy pug. “Sorry” said Kate “the only little pug I have
that needs a home is Rose. She is a very special little girl.”   Kate told them I was sick but all they said was
“When can we come see her ?”  They came to see me the following Saturday. When they first came in the door
the first thing they said was “ Oh my gosh, she is beautiful!! Can we have her?”  Kate reminded them of my
medical condition—“ We don’t care ! We want to love her and keep her safe for as long as she is with us !”
